School's Out

It's the kids favorite time of the year...Summer Vacation. How about mom? I'm excited too!!! We have made it through our first school year of Home schooling. Hip Hip Hooray! And without too much criticism, too.

You know, I'm the type of person who thrives on crazyness...I'm the one who wanted to be a stay at home mom and not work 40 hours a week or more, I'm the one who wanted 4 or more children, I'm the one who at age 30 went to hair school, just for fun, after having 3 children, I'm the one who invites all 6 of the grandchildren to go to the waterpark with only me, I'm the one who fosters a 20 month old, even though I have 3 children of my own, why wouldn't I home school my kids?

Yea, my family members thought I was crazy, and some probley still think that, but I am having the time of my life and the kids love being home too. In fact, most kids that find out that we home school want to know why they can't be home schooled. Many of them ask if I could home school them too. I say sure, but their parents don't agree. If only they would try it...they might enjoy it too. Sure, I thought at one point in my life that I wasn't smart enough to school my kids, but then I started to think about it; I taught all three of my children to talk, to walk, to go potty on a toilet, to write, to sing, to pray, to count, their ABC's, the colors, I taught them manners and how to be respectful. Heck, I even put in many of hours reading to them and being read to...why couldn't I be their teacher?

Our first year has been a wonderful year. My time with the kids has been amazing. If I had time to stop and kick myself for not doing this sooner, I would. The changes that I have seen in our children since last May make me proud of who they are. Their work and dedication to schooling at home is unbelievable. They are so responsible and such hard workers. And to think that their teachers, strangers, were getting to spend these precious moments with my children, 7 hours a day, five days a week.

As for this summer...I will be entertaining 7 children during the day. My four plus my two nephews and my neice. We will be spending time at the library reading, time at the park behind our house, time in our pool and time just hanging out as a family. I love the bond that we have. The closeness that our children share as they learn from each other all day long. I think that others can see the difference too. Thank you Lord that we are not normal!
